Description:

Purpose: Students will study the story of Canada from the beginning of the twentieth century to the present with special attention given to Canada's Christian heritage. Students will study the key components of the Canadian political system and the influence of Canadian Christians on Canadian society. Students will explore Canadian and world geography and learn to approach God's creation with an attitude of Christian stewardship.


Outline: There are three units in this course: The Canadian Story (Canadian History - 8 chapters), God and Government (Canadian Government - 4 chapters), and Stewardship of a Nation (Canadian and World Geography - 6 chapters). The required texts are Counterpoints Exploring Canadian Issues by Michael Cranny and Garvin Moles and From the Tower of Babel to Parliament Hill by Brian C. Stiller. Recommended web links and resources are provided throughout the lessons.



Skills Developed:



  • Provincial Exam: All grade 11 students are required to take the BC Ministry of Education Provincial Exam.

  • Unit Tests: There will be a paragraph / essay test at the end of each unit.

  • Chapter Quizzes: There will be a chapter quiz at the end of each chapter. Chapter quizzes are a combination of multiple choice, true/false, fill in the blanks, and / or matching questions based on chapter content.

  • Small Essays or Super Essay: Students will write three small papers (1000 words minimum, 1500 words maximum) on topics drawn from each of the three units OR, alternatively, students may write one large "super-essay" (4000 words minimum, 5000 words maximum) that probes one course topic in greater depth.

  • Group Discussion Forum: Students are required to attend a half-hour on-line forum at least once a week.

  • Assignments: A variety of reading comprehension assignments will be offered for each lesson to prepare students for the weekly quizzes, end-of-unit tests, and Provincial Exam.
