Lesson 3: Part 2
Pick Your Passion!
Welcome back, Master Mind!
Unless you are at a Youth Conference, are you aware that you are noticeably outnumbered by people older than you?? Does it seem like there are five adults for every youth? Well, here’s the 911. You are outnumbered!! And this is a valuable clue when solving the future career mystery!
The general population is aging and this will definitely affect the business and job market that you will be part of. For example, consider the following article from the National Post, February 11, 2003.
Demographer David Foot predicts a number of areas where the baby boom exodus will open employment and growth. Among them:
“Where I think there will likely be a huge shortage is in the trades. The average age for most of the workers in this sector is now in their 50s.”
“Teachers are definitely going to retire… but over the next 10 years, there will be a huge demand for college and university teachers.”
“Health care is an area that will definitely face shortages in the next five to 10 years, not because of the baby boomers, but because the parents of the baby boomers. Those born in the roaring twenties badly need health care.”
“Watch out for growth in the financial planning services. In your 50s, you haven’t had a chance yet to save for your retirement. You’ve been too busy paying off your mortgage and putting your kids through university. So, in your 50s, you’re going to want to save for your retirement.”
“They’re going to want quality vacations and will want to buy vacation properties.”
“They will want safety in their vehicles. You’ll see a lot of those humongous four-by-fours around.”
You may decide to pursue a more traditional approach to a job or profession or you may be looking at business ownership or entrepreneurship in your focus area. For those of you that suddenly perked up, consider the following statement from the National Content Standards for Entrepreneurship Education:
Entrepreneurship is a key driver of our economy.
Wealth and a high majority of jobs are created by small businesses started by entrepreneurially minded individuals, many of whom go on to create big businesses. People exposed to entrepreneurship frequently express that they have more opportunity to exercise creative freedoms, higher self esteem, and an overall greater sense of control over their own lives. As a result, many experienced business people political leaders, economists, and educators believe that fostering a robust entrepreneurial culture will maximize individual and collective economic and social success on a local, national, and global scale.
