The object of this lesson is to:
- evaluate a conservative Christian perspective on economic development
- understand the stages of economic development, the concepts of core and periphery, and economic patterns of change
- answer the question: Should equalization payments be used to solve Canada's regional disparities?

Here are some questions to stimulate your thinking as you write your responses. Remember that your primary task is to answer the ‘Topic of the Week’ question:
- Has Christianity become the happy mistress of capitalism and unrestrained development?
- Should governments rob from the rich to give to the poor?
- What are the criteria for maintaining the viability of a region?
- Should ‘sunset industries’ be maintained by government money?
- Is the productivity of a region the most important factor in determining whether it should / should not receive aid during downturns in the economy?
- Should government money be used to address economic disparities?
- Should governments strive to make all regions equal?
- What is the root cause of economic disparities?
- Would Colson endorse the solutions offered in the Counterpoints text? (see ‘Helping the Periphery’ pages 413 – 415)
